About University of Maryland University College
Since 1947, University of Maryland University College (UMUC) has specialized in offering degree and nondegree programs for adults in both traditional classroom and distance delivery formats. One of 11 institutions within the University System of Maryland, UMUC specializes in offering college-level courses for people who cannot or choose not to attend college full time. A wide variety of curricula and programs has been developed to meet the needs of part-time adult students. The university-level programs include bachelors degrees in more than 30 areas, certificates in several areas of study, and masters degrees in 6 areas. The UMUC Center for Professional Development offers noncredit career development programs that range from science and technology to executive leadership development.
UMUC comprises three major geographical divisions: Statewide, European, and Asian. The Office of Undergraduate Programs administers both the credit-bearing courses offered throughout the greater Baltimore/Washington area and those offered nationwide in a distance delivery format. The European and Asian Divisions administer overseas courses under contract to the Department of Defense; these courses (usually offered on U.S. military bases) carry full residence credit.
At the UMUC Center of Adult Education and Student and Faculty Services Center, many services are available in the evening and on weekends in addition to normal business hours. The centers serve currently enrolled students as well as those who are interested in exploring their career and personal goals with an academic advisor, a career advisor, or both.
